Kara Bridge Crashes Prompt FRSC Traffic Advisory

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway witnessed a series of road traffic crashes early Friday at Kara Bridge, prompting the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to advise motorists to use alternative routes.

According to the FRSC Lagos Sector Command, the first crash occurred at approximately 12:05 a.m. on the outbound carriageway towards Ibadan, with five articulated trucks and a Toyota Sienna vehicle involved. Preliminary investigations suggest that speed violations and loss of control contributed to the accident.

Seven adult males were involved, with one fatality, one injury, and five unhurt. The deceased remains trapped under a heavily loaded truck, requiring heavy-duty recovery equipment before evacuation, the FRSC said.

While rescue operations continued, a second crash was reported at 3:15 a.m. on the inbound carriageway towards Lagos. A Mazda commercial bus experienced brake failure, leaving the driver seriously injured. He was swiftly rescued and taken to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for treatment.

FRSC, together with LASEMA and other emergency responders, is working to evacuate the vehicles, recover the trapped victim, and restore traffic flow. Corps Commander Kehinde Ganiyu Hamzat sympathised with the victims’ families, urging motorists to exercise patience and caution.

Motorists are advised to divert through the Ikorodu-Sagamu route when heading towards Ibadan, or through Lekki-Epe or Ikorodu-Sagamu expressways when entering Lagos.

The FRSC emphasised that drivers, particularly those operating articulated trucks and commercial buses, must ensure their vehicles are mechanically sound, paying close attention to brakes. The agency also urged minimising night journeys, reducing speed in poor visibility, maintaining safe following distances, and resting when fatigued.

“The FRSC remains committed to ensuring the safety of all road users and will continue to work with relevant agencies to restore normalcy as quickly as possible,” said SRC Elizabeth Oluwadamilola Jayeola, Sector Public Education Officer.

Traffic along the Kara-Ojodu Berger corridor is expected to remain disrupted until recovery operations conclude.
