The Kebbi State Government has said the loud explosion heard at the General Hospital in Bagudo in the early hours of Tuesday was caused by a fire, not a bomb blast.

Yahaya Sarki, Governor Nasir Idris’s Special Advisor on Media and Publicity, said in a statement that the explanation followed widespread speculation on social media that the incident was linked to an explosive device.

The Secretary to the State Government said preliminary findings and reports from security agencies showed that the explosion resulted from a fire outbreak in the hospital staff quarters, according to Sarki.

The police and other security agencies have taken charge of the situation, Sarki said, and the state government is collaborating closely with them.

Sarki also confirmed that no casualties were recorded and that a building was affected by the fire; all occupants had safely evacuated the area before the explosion.

He, however, asked residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information that could cause panic.

Sarki added that all security agencies, including the police, the military, and other relevant units, are actively managing the situation and that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.
