Kenyan Comedian, Eric Omondi Freed After Half-Naked Protest

Kenyan comedian Eric Omondi has been granted bail after being arrested on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 and charged with unlawful assembly for participating in a shirtless protest near Kenyan Parliament.

Omondi and others appeared in a Milimani court, where they pleaded for their release on good terms, claiming that they were representing millions of Kenyans and that they were mostly content creators, whereas Omondi is an international entertainment brand.

They denied the charges and were granted sh295,000 in cash bail. They claimed that the high cost of living was the reason they stormed Kenya’s Parliament.

On Tuesday, he was bundled into a police car and rushed to officers who were also teargassing other protesters in an attempt to restore order.

Eric Omondi, who is known for staging protests, caged himself outside Kenya’s parliament exactly a year ago, demanding that legislators pass a bill requiring Kenyan media to play 75% local content. He stated that his protest was intended to compel parliament to hold a debate on how to ensure that local music receives at least 75% of airplay.
