Kremlin Praises US Foreign Policy Shift Under Trump

The Kremlin has welcomed what it sees as a dramatic shift in US foreign policy under President Donald Trump, stating that the new approach largely aligns with Russia’s vision.

Since taking office in January, Trump has sought closer ties with Moscow, reaching out to President Vladimir Putin and siding with Russia on key issues at the United Nations.

“The new administration is rapidly changing all foreign policy configurations. This largely coincides with our vision,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with state television.

While Peskov acknowledged the damage done to US-Russia relations in previous years, he expressed optimism about the potential for improvement.

“If the political will of the two leaders, President Putin and President Trump, is maintained, this path can be quite quick and successful,” he hinted.

Peskov’s comments, made on Wednesday, were only broadcast publicly on Sunday.

Trump has since taken further steps that appear to align with Moscow’s interests, including a striking rebuke of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a televised confrontation at the White House on Friday.

Moscow has long been critical of former US President Joe Biden’s strong backing of Ukraine, particularly after Russia launched its full-scale military offensive against its neighbour in February 2022.

The apparent shift in US policy could signal a new chapter in Washington-Moscow relations as Trump and Putin continue to strengthen diplomatic ties.
