The Kurdistan Regional Government has requested that Iraqi federal authorities intervene to halt a series of daily drone attacks launched by pro-Iranian armed groups.

In a statement to AFP on Friday, March 27, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani identified “outlier militias” operating within Iraq as the perpetrators of the persistent strikes.

These attacks primarily target U.S. military advisors who are stationed in the autonomous northern region as part of an international coalition focused on anti-jihadist operations.

Talabani emphasised that Kurdish officials have raised this security concern with Baghdad on numerous occasions, calling for a decisive engagement to prevent these groups from using Iraqi soil to launch strikes against the Kurdistan region.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the federal government has committed to stopping the aerial assaults.

However, the frequency of the drone activity suggests that a permanent solution has yet to be implemented.

The ongoing instability highlights the complex security landscape in the region, as autonomous Kurdish authorities navigate the presence of international advisors and the influence of regional militias.

As the “Sunshine Double” in global sports and other geopolitical shifts dominate the news, this local conflict remains a critical point of friction between the regional government in Erbil and the central authorities in Baghdad.
