KWAM 1 Named FAAN Ambassador After Airport Incident

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) will engage Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshall, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for airport security protocols, following his recent altercation at the Abuja airport.

The move comes after the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) agreed to reduce KWAM 1’s flight ban from six to one month.

According to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the decision was taken on compassionate grounds after the music star publicly showed remorse for his actions.

In addition to the reduced sanction, the NCAA will withdraw its earlier criminal complaints against KWAM 1 filed with the police. The ambassadorial role will see him work closely with FAAN to promote proper conduct and security awareness among air travellers.

Meanwhile, the NCAA has also restored the licences of Captain Oluranti Ogoyi and First Officer Ivan Oloba of ValueJet, who were similarly placed on a one-month ban. Both will undergo mandatory professional reappraisal before returning to duty.

“These decisions were taken purely on compassionate grounds,” Keyamo said, stressing that the government remains committed to enforcing aviation safety and security while drawing a firm line after these clemencies.

Keyamo disclosed that the government will begin a retreat next week to retrain aviation security personnel on de-escalating conflicts with disruptive passengers. Airlines will also have dedicated sessions to address the conduct of their staff towards the travelling public.
