Prominent labour activist and Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF), Comrade Abiodun Aremu, has died after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the road near his home in Ota, Ogun State, on Sunday, October 12, 2025.

The 65-year-old was hit around 6 p.m. and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him using oxygen. Despite their efforts, he was later pronounced dead.

Aremu, widely respected within Nigeria’s labour and civil society movements, was renowned for his unwavering advocacy for social justice, workers’ welfare, and democratic transformation.

Until his passing, he served as Secretary of JAF, the coalition of pro-labour civil society organisations in Nigeria.

Following his death, his family and the Labour Movement have jointly agreed to postpone his burial to 23 October 2025 to enable the movement to organise a fitting farewell. He had initially been scheduled for burial on Monday,  October 13.

In a statement on behalf of the Labour Movement, Comrade Owei Lakemfa, former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity (OATUU) and ex-Acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), confirmed the new date.

“The Aremu family has agreed with the Labour Movement to shift the interment of our leader, Comrade Abiodun ‘Aremson’ Aremu, by about two weeks to allow for proper mobilisation and attendance,” Lakemfa stated.

He added that the burial will now take place on Thursday, October 23 2025, at 30 Kabiru Fatoye Street, opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road, along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.

Lakemfa extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, describing Aremu as a fearless comrade and a steadfast defender of the oppressed.

“Our hearts go out to the family of our departed comrade,” he said.
