The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has fixed May 23 for its presidential primary ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party’s Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, Ken Asogwa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja. He said the date was part of a broader timetable approved during a statutory NEC meeting observed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, the party will submit its membership register to INEC by April 15 in line with electoral guidelines, adding that primaries for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly positions have been scheduled for May 15.
Asogwa said the NEC also ratified earlier actions by the party leadership concerning ward, local government and state congresses, which are set to hold on March 26, March 28 and March 31, respectively.

The party’s national convention has been slated for April 11.
He noted that the council reviewed recent developments within the party, including what it described as the invasion of its national secretariat by hoodlums allegedly backed by some individuals.
“The council, which remains the highest decision-making organ of the party after the national convention, reviewed recent developments within the party.
“This included the recent unfortunate invasion of the party secretariat by hoodlums allegedly sponsored by certain rogue elements,” he said.
Following recommendations from its Peace, Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee, the party’s Board of Trustees approved the suspension of some members over alleged indiscipline, anti-party activities and involvement in the incident at the secretariat.
Asogwa also said the NEC endorsed expanding the party’s membership register through a combination of digital registration and manual processes in rural areas, aimed at improving transparency and participation.
He added that the council approved the appointment of interim leaders to fill vacant positions within party structures, pending the conduct of proper congresses.
The NEC further encouraged members to resolve disputes through internal mechanisms to promote unity within the party.
He noted that the council welcomed a recent High Court ruling affirming Nenadi Usman as Interim National Chairman and passed a vote of confidence in her leadership, as well as that of the party’s national working committee, board of trustees, labour unions and Abia State Governor Alex Otti.
Asogwa also commended INEC for complying with the court’s decision.
