The kingmakers have unanimously endorsed former Oyo State Governor, Rashidi Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The Olubadan-In-Council ratified Ladoja, who currently holds the position of Otun Olubadan, during a meeting at the new Olubadan Palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan. This endorsement follows the passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, on July 7, 2025.
As Otun Olubadan, the highest-ranking chief on the civil line, Ladoja is next in line under Ibadan’s unique rotational chieftaincy system.
Announcing the decision, the Balogun of Ibadanland, Tajudeen Ajibola, confirmed that the council would forward Ladoja’s name to Governor Seyi Makinde for formal approval and subsequent installation.
“The council believes Ladoja’s experience and wisdom make him the ideal leader,” Ajibola stated. “His tenure as governor and his deep-rooted connection with Ibadan give us confidence in his capacity to guide our land toward unity and progress.”
He added that the council expects Ladoja to uphold traditional values while embracing development and modernity.
Born on September 25, 1944 in Gambari village near Ibadan, Ladoja attended Ibadan Boys’ High School and Olivet Baptist High School before earning a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Liège, Belgium. He began his career at Total before moving into business and later, politics.
Ladoja served as Governor of Oyo State from May 2003 under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) until his controversial impeachment in January 2006. He was reinstated by the Supreme Court in December 2006 and completed his term in May 2007.
In August 2024, he accepted the ceremonial beaded crown required under the amended chieftaincy declaration, affirming his readiness to ascend the throne.
Speaking on a private Ibadan radio station, Ladoja said, “By the grace of God, I will become Olubadan. My blood pressure has remained stable. Whoever God has destined to become Olubadan will surely become Olubadan.”
The formal ceremony to present Ladoja to the public is expected after the governor’s official confirmation.
