The Lagos State Government has announced a temporary traffic diversion on Independence Bridge, Lagos Island, as the Federal Ministry of Works begins urgent asphalt repairs.

The repairs will begin at night on Friday, October 16, 2026, and continue through Saturday, October 17, and Sunday, October 18.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the work would affect both inbound and outbound lanes. He added that traffic management measures would be introduced to reduce disruption to motorists.

The government explained that sections of the bridge would be closed partially, one at a time, while a lane would remain open to maintain access for road users.

“The Lagos State Government wishes to inform the public that traffic will be diverted on the Independence Bridge in Lagos Island as the Federal Ministry of Works commences urgent repairs of the bridge,” the statement said.

Motorists have been advised to plan their journeys in advance and use alternative routes where possible throughout the repair period.

“Motorists are urged to plan their movement and make use of alternative routes to connect their desired destinations for the duration of the repairs,” the statement added.

To manage traffic around the affected sections, officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be deployed to direct vehicles and minimise delays.

The government urged motorists to remain patient, comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic officials during the exercise.

Road users travelling through Lagos Island and neighbouring areas have also been advised to allow extra time for their journeys and follow instructions from traffic management personnel until the repairs are completed.
