The Lagos State Government has announced that the ongoing decommissioning of the Olusosun landfill is responsible for the waste buildup reported in parts of the state.
In a post on his official X handle, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the refuse that was previously taken to Olusosun is now being moved to landfill sites in Epe and Badagry.
“Firstly, the ongoing decommissioning of the Olusosun landfill has necessitated a significant shift in waste disposal logistics. Refuse previously destined for Olusosun is now being transported to alternative facilities in Epe and Badagry,” Wahab said on Monday.
Wahab noted that “this change has, understandably, increased turnaround times for some Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators and created temporary pressure within the evacuation system.”
He revealed that the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has been directed to provide immediate support in areas where PSP operators are overwhelmed.
“Intervention activities are actively ongoing, particularly at identified black spots across the state,” he added.

Wahab noted that the state government is also discussing the procurement and deployment of additional trucks to improve response times and ensure more efficient evacuation.
On enforcement, the commissioner said a task force has been established to address illegal roadside dumping and indiscriminate waste disposal, noting that the team will operate with 24-hour surveillance and enforcement powers.
Wahab urged residents to dispose of waste properly, to patronise only approved PSP operators, and to shun any act of littering
“As we collectively address these operational challenges, we also appeal to all residents to celebrate responsibly. Whether for personal milestones, holidays, or community events, we urge you to protect our environment by disposing of all waste appropriately through your approved PSP operators and shunning any act of littering.
“While we take full responsibility for these inconveniences, let me assure all Lagosians that this administration is fully committed to the vision of a cleaner, more orderly, and sustainable city. The current challenges are being actively and systematically addressed through deliberate and targeted measures.”
