A fire at a residential property on Bola Street in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State has claimed the life of a 103-year-old woman and destroyed several buildings and household items.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu. The agency received an emergency alert around noon on Friday.
Response teams arrived at the scene by 12:13 p.m. and found a bungalow with two attached shops completely engulfed by flames. Oke-Osanyintolu explained that the fire began in one room before rapidly spreading throughout the building. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
“Upon arrival of the LASEMA Response Team, it was observed that a residential bungalow with two shops attached was engulfed by fire,” he said.

Emergency response procedures were immediately activated, but a preliminary assessment confirmed that the elderly woman trapped inside did not survive. “Unfortunately, one life, a 103-year-old centenarian, was lost to the incident,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
The blaze affected eight rooms, a mini flat, six shops, and numerous household items. The deceased’s remains were handed over to her family, and firefighters, working with other emergency responders, successfully extinguished the fire.
“The recovered body has been handed over to the family for necessary action. The fire has been completely extinguished,” the permanent secretary stated. Rescue, recovery, and dampening operations have concluded, while authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damage.
