The Lagos State Government has approved a three-month rebate window for motorists to replace faded or unreadable vehicle number plates to improve road safety, vehicle identification and security.

The approval was granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, according to the Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA), Rasheed Muri-Okunola.

Muri-Okunola said the rebate was designed to encourage compliance while easing the financial burden on vehicle owners whose number plates have become worn or illegible over time.

The condition of vehicle number plates is critical to effective traffic management, crime detection and overall public safety, Muri-Okunola said, noting that faded plates make it harder for law enforcement agencies to identify vehicles.

“Clear and properly maintained number plates are essential for vehicle identification and security. This three-month rebate is designed to give motorists ample opportunity to replace faded plates at a reduced cost,” he added.

He explained that the rebate applies specifically to vehicle owners whose number plates have become worn, faded, or unclear over time due to weather conditions and prolonged use.
Affected motorists have been advised to visit the MVAA One-Stop Centre in Oshodi or any MVAA office across the state to process replacements.

Muri-Okunola said the initiative reflects the state government’s approach of encouraging voluntary compliance through incentives rather than penalties, while still strengthening enforcement.

He added that readable number plates support traffic regulation, criminal investigations, and the state’s digital vehicle tracking systems.

“This is not just a regulatory exercise; it is a public safety measure. When number plates are clear and standardised, it improves efficiency across transportation, security, and emergency response systems,” he added.
Muri-Okunola assured motorists of smooth service delivery during the rebate period and warned against using unauthorised agents, stressing that all replacements must be carried out through approved government centres.
