Health workers across Lagos will return to hospitals and clinics after days of uncertainty, following the suspension of the strike by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU), Lagos State branch.
In a statement issued at the weekend, the union’s state secretary, Kabiawu Gbolahan, confirmed that the strike had been called off after the intervention of the Lagos State House of Assembly. He explained that the decision followed extensive consultations with key labour bodies, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC).
According to the union, lawmakers gave firm assurances that the concerns raised by health workers would be given fair and favourable consideration. On the strength of those promises, JOHESU directed its members to resume work immediately, a move expected to bring relief to patients and families who had been affected by the disruption in public health services.
Gbolahan also stressed that no health worker should face victimisation for participating in the strike, noting that the House of Assembly had clearly guaranteed their protection.
In a separate statement on Sunday, the Lagos State Government confirmed that both sides had found common ground, leading to the suspension of the industrial action.
The statement stated: “The Lagos State government and the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) have reached an agreement leading to the immediate suspension of the strike previously embarked upon by the union in the state’s health sector.

“The resolution followed a high-level meeting convened by the government to address the issues that gave rise to the industrial action. Both parties engaged in frank and constructive discussions with a commitment to safeguarding public health and restoring normalcy in healthcare facilities in the state.
“During the engagement, the state government reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the union’s demands within the framework of established regulations and provided clear assurances, including timelines for the resolution of the outstanding concerns raised by the union.
“In view of these commitments and in the overriding interest of public health and industrial harmony, the leadership of JOHESU resolved to call off the strike. After consulting its relevant organs and members, the union formally communicated its decision to the state government.
“Both parties have agreed to sustain dialogue and maintain open channels of communication to ensure the diligent implementation of the understandings reached.
“Government further acknowledges the vital role of allied health professionals in sustaining efficient healthcare delivery and reiterates its dedication to equitable treatment, improved working conditions and the continuous strengthening of the state’s health system for the benefit of the citizens.
“Healthcare workers are, therefore, expected to resume duties promptly, as the state government continues consultations to ensure that the resolutions reached translate into lasting outcomes.
“Lagos State Government expresses appreciation to residents for their patience and understanding during the period of the strike and reassures the public of its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted access to quality healthcare services in the state.”
