Lagos Moves to Enforce Single-Use Plastics Ban

The Lagos State Government hosted members of the Food and Beverages Recyclers Alliance (FBRA) on Thursday to discuss the upcoming enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics (SUP). Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab emphasised that full enforcement will begin soon, with stakeholder engagement and advocacy continuing in the lead-up.

Wahab reiterated the government’s commitment to the SUP ban, describing it as intentional and strategic. Discussions covered extended producer responsibilities and FBRA’s collaboration with the government.

Urgent Call for Nigerian Government to Prohibit Styrofoam and Single-Use Plastics Usage

Wahab noted that the enforcement of the ban will be complex, particularly concerning SUPs, and requires careful planning. The government is not banning sachet water, only plastics under 40 microns. He reassured that buyback schemes for sachets are being developed, with further recycling initiatives underway.
