Lagos Police Declare Sowore Wanted

The Lagos State Police Command has declared human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, wanted in connection with an alleged plan to incite public unrest and block major roads throughout the state.

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh announced during a briefing at the Iyana-Oworo area of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Monday,

CP Jimoh claimed that intelligence reports linked Sowore and his associates to plans to organise coordinated protests at key locations, including the Third Mainland Bridge, Lekki Tollgate, and Freedom Park. He cautioned that any effort to obstruct major roads or provoke unrest would be met with strong consequences.

“The command is closing in on Mr Sowore and others accused of coordinating activities intended to disrupt public peace,” the Commissioner said. “Sowore should surrender at the nearest police station or face arrest wherever he is found.”

The police chief revealed that 13 individuals have already been apprehended in connection with the planned demonstration, while Sowore has reportedly gone into hiding, adding that investigations are ongoing to uncover sponsors and accomplices.

“Anyone attempting to cause disturbance or block our roads will face the full weight of the law,” CP Jimoh declared. “It is only someone who needs examination that would attempt to block such a vital route used by thousands daily.”

In anticipation of potential disruptions, Jimoh said officers had been assigned to critical areas around the city, especially major bridges and highways, where temporary roadblocks and diversions have been set up.

Jimoh also responded to public anxiety stemming from recent demolitions in certain areas of Lagos, particularly in Oworosoki, noting that the residents affected have received appropriate compensation.

Reiterating the command’s dedication to upholding law and order, the Commissioner emphasised that while citizens possess the right to express themselves freely, such rights should not be misused.
