The Lagos State Police Command has opened an investigation into a controversial arrest seen in a viral video.

The incident happened in Ikorodu on Saturday, where the footage showed a police officer restraining a bus conductor during an attempted arrest.

Public anger grew after the officer appeared to use force on the half-naked conductor.

Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the inquiry in a statement on Sunday, November 30.

According to the statement, the bus driver had deliberately blocked traffic, causing serious congestion and hardship for road users in the Ikorodu area.

During the attempt to arrest the conductor, he allegedly stripped himself to avoid being apprehended, which was when the video was recorded.

The Command said the officer involved has been identified and placed under investigation, and the conductor has been invited to meet the Commissioner of Police on Monday.

Despite the conductor’s behaviour, the police said they must assess whether the officer’s actions were appropriate.
The impounded bus is now in police custody for further checks.

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh urged residents to obey the law and report any rights violations by officers.

He also warned against the “unnecessary dramatisation” targeting the officer.

The police reminded the public that resisting lawful arrest is a criminal offence.

The Command promised a transparent investigation and pledged to make its findings public.
