A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Equatorial Guinea has killed a woman and her six children, according to emergency responders.
Rescue teams recovered two bodies early Friday, including that of the 36-year-old woman, who was reportedly eight months pregnant, witnesses at the scene said.
Residents said the incident occurred on Thursday in Malabo, the capital of Equatorial Guinea, following intense downpours.
A nearby resident, Dominica Ada, explained that a concrete retaining wall collapsed onto the family’s wooden home before the landslide struck, burying those inside.
“It was a concrete retaining wall that collapsed onto their wooden house, followed by a landslide.
“The mother and her six children were all inside,” she added.
Officials and the Archbishop of Malabo have since visited the site to offer condolences and support ongoing rescue efforts.
