LAWMA Reaffirms Commitment to Street Sweepers’ Welfare and Safety

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has reiterated its commitment to enhancing the welfare and working conditions of street sweepers across the state. The agency highlighted its ongoing efforts to improve the safety, well-being, and overall efficiency of the workers involved in maintaining the cleanliness of Lagos.

In a statement titled ‘Understanding the Lagos Street Sweeping Program: Structure, Remuneration, and Commitment to Worker Welfare,’ LAWMA noted that the street sweeping initiative had achieved significant success, particularly under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The statement emphasised that the success of the program depends heavily on the dedication of the street sweepers, and that LAWMA would continue to implement policies that prioritise their welfare while enhancing service delivery.

The statement outlined the critical role of the street sweeping program in maintaining a clean and healthy environment, with LAWMA ensuring that the operations run smoothly and that workers are fairly compensated and supported. Street sweepers are employed through private companies, which are responsible for paying their workers based on clearly defined contracts that outline responsibilities and entitlements.

In line with a recent wage review, the salaries of sweepers have been adjusted to align with the national minimum wage, with a structure that ensures fair compensation relative to their four-hour daily shifts. Sweepers now earn ₦40,000 per month, while supervisors earn ₦50,000 per month. This pay structure provides workers with financial stability and flexibility for additional economic activities outside of their assigned shifts.

LAWMA also highlighted several initiatives to improve workers’ safety and well-being. These include regular health and safety training, reclassification of sweeping routes to prioritise safety and security, accident and emergency insurance coverage for work-related incidents, and the provision of uniforms and necessary work tools to ensure dignity and efficiency in their duties. The agency also stated that any reports of salary discrepancies or contractual violations would be promptly investigated, with corrective actions taken as necessary.

LAWMA concluded the statement by reaffirming its commitment to addressing the concerns of street sweepers and ensuring they are treated fairly per agreed-upon standards.
