Liberia has regained its membership of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission.
Its membership as a Cooperating Non-Contracting Party to the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission enables the country’s flagged vessels to operate within the space.
Liberia, heavy on fisheries in the region is in five regional bodies with the Tuna Commission being one of them.
Liberia as a Flag, Coastal and Ports state has to ensure it has an active status with the regional ocean bodies in order to make the most of its abundance as a country.
An active membership status is also expected to help Liberia have an unrestricted access to flagged fishing vessels and transshipment vessels.
The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission was established for nations to cooperate accordingly across their strengths and encourage sustainable development of fisheries across various stocks.
Liberia had joined in the 12-day meeting of the commission as a Non-contracting party as part of the Rules and Regulations to restore their membership status.
