Liberia Seeks Collaboration with Nigeria to Combat Climate Change

Liberian parliamentarians and environmentalists have called for collaboration with Nigeria to tackle the devastating effects of climate change, which is affecting countries worldwide. The delegation, led by Mr. Ernest Manseah Snr, held separate discussions with the Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Ecology and Climate Change at Nigeria’s National Assembly.

Mr. Manseah emphasised that Nigeria, being a global leader in climate change mitigation, is seen as a model for other countries. He expressed the desire to learn from Nigeria’s successful efforts in combating climate challenges and noted Liberia’s interest in establishing a Climate Fund while adopting Nigeria’s effective environmental measures.

The Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, chaired by Senator Seriake Dickson, welcomed the Liberian delegation, emphasising the importance of regional cooperation to address climate change. Senator Dickson highlighted Nigeria’s pioneering climate change legislation, the first of its kind in Africa, but stressed that further collaboration with other African nations was necessary to strengthen the fight against climate change.

Senators, including Osita Ngwu, Adetokunbo Abiru, and Victor Umeh, echoed the need for a broader regional approach, advocating for the inclusion of other African countries in the collaboration. The delegation later continued their discussions with the House of Representatives on similar initiatives to deepen the partnership.
