Lightning has killed 10 children during a football game in a village near Kampala, the Uganda capital.
The children, aged between 11 and 16, were said to have taken shelter from a storm in a grass-thatched house at Arua Village on Thursday.
Speaking of the incident, police spokeswoman Josephine Angucia said: “these are young boys who had been playing football when the rain began to fall and lightning struck them.”
The police spokeswoman said four other children were injured.
“Relatives have been picking up the bodies from the mortuary since yesterday and the burials are taking place from today,” she added.
Uganda National Meteorological Authority recently warned of enhanced rainfall.
News Central reports that in June, no fewer than 18 suspected kidnappers were killed by lightning strikes in a forest on the border between Nigeria and Cameroon.
The group was gathered in a forest in Nigeria’s northeastern Adamawa State allegedly to distribute ransom payments among themselves.
It was alleged that the kidnappers had collected over N20m (over $51,000) from victims between Koncha in Cameroon and Toungo in Nigeria.
It was alleged that people angered by incessant attacks by the group “had consulted a native doctor to send thunder after the bandits.”
