American skiing legend Lindsey Vonn’s Olympic comeback ended in heartbreak on Sunday after a brutal crash during the women’s downhill.

Competing at age 41 with a recently ruptured ACL, Vonn lost control just 13 seconds into her run and was eventually airlifted to a hospital via helicopter.

Despite the tragedy, the U.S. still secured the top podium spot as Breezy Johnson took gold, narrowly beating Germany’s Emma Aicher.

Vonn, who came out of retirement in 2024 following knee surgery, had hoped to mirror her 2010 Vancouver success, but the physical toll proved too great.

Elsewhere in the Milan-Cortina Games, the Czech Republic’s Zuzana Maderova won gold in snowboard parallel giant slalom after favourite Ester Ledecka crashed out.

Meanwhile, Norway’s Johannes Klaebo claimed his sixth career Olympic gold in the cross-country skiathlon.
