Roger Allers, the acclaimed filmmaker and animator who co-directed Disney’s landmark animated film The Lion King, has died at the age of 76, the company announced.

According to reports by The Hollywood Reporter, Allers passed away at his California home on Saturday following a brief illness. 

Best known for his work on The Lion King (1994), one of Disney’s most successful animated features, Allers also played key creative roles in several other major studio productions, including Tron, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.

Disney chief executive Robert Iger paid tribute to Allers, describing him as a visionary storyteller whose influence would span across generations.

He noted that Allers had a rare ability to blend character, emotion and music into stories that resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.

“Roger Allers was a creative visionary whose many contributions to Disney will live on for generations to come. 

“He understood the power of great storytelling, how unforgettable characters, emotion and music can come together to create something timeless.”

Allers’ contributions helped shape a defining era of Disney animation, leaving a lasting legacy within the industry.
