Liverpool Complete Signing of Jeremie Frimpong

Liverpool have officially signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen, the Premier League champions confirmed on Friday.

While the club has not revealed the transfer fee or contract duration, British media reports suggest Frimpong has committed to a five-year deal worth €35 million (£29.5 million).

Frimpong’s arrival at Anfield was announced just hours after Liverpool confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold would be moving to Real Madrid in time for the Club World Cup.

The Dutch right-back, aged 24, appears to be a direct replacement for the departing England international, with Liverpool activating Frimpong’s release clause.

Frimpong was instrumental in Leverkusen’s maiden Bundesliga title-winning campaign in 2023/24, making 53 appearances across all competitions as the club finished runners-up this season.

However, Frimpong faces competition for the right-back position from Northern Ireland defender Conor Bradley, who recently extended his contract with Liverpool for four years.

Frimpong began his youth career at Manchester City before moving to Celtic in September 2019, and subsequently transferring to Leverkusen in January 2021.

He will join a strong Dutch contingent at Liverpool, including manager Arne Slot and players such as captain Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, and Ryan Gravenberch.

Meanwhile, Liverpool remain in negotiations with Leverkusen over signing Frimpong’s former teammate Florian Wirtz.

Reports earlier on Friday indicated Liverpool had increased their offer for the German midfielder to £109 million ($146 million).

This second bid includes add-ons that would make Wirtz the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history.

Although Bayern Munich and Manchester City have also shown interest, it is understood Wirtz has made clear to Leverkusen his preference to join Liverpool ahead of next season.

The 22-year-old has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest young playmakers, playing a key role in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga triumph last season.

Wirtz was awarded Bundesliga Player of the Season for his contributions during the 2023/24 campaign.

He played 31 league matches this season, scoring 10 goals as Leverkusen secured second place behind Bayern.

Since making his debut for Leverkusen at 17 after signing from Cologne in 2020, Wirtz has netted 57 goals in 197 appearances.
