Liverpool have reportedly won the race to sign highly rated Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet, beating out Premier League rivals Chelsea.
The deal for the 20-year-old French U21 international is valued at up to £60 million ($82 million), with an initial payment of £55 million and the remainder tied to performance-based add-ons.
Despite the significant investment, Jacquet will remain with Rennes until the end of the season.
This decision comes as a surprise to some, given the current defensive crisis at Anfield; manager Arne Slot is presently relying on an ageing Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, with Joe Gomez and Giovanni Leoni both unavailable due to injury.

Jacquet reportedly chose Liverpool over Chelsea to avoid the “bloated” squad at Stamford Bridge, favouring the clearer path to first-team football in Merseyside.
Though he has only made 31 senior appearances in Ligue 1, his arrival is seen as a crucial step in future-proofing a Liverpool backline that faces several contract uncertainties this summer.
