The impressive managerial performance of Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen has made him a sought-after figure, with Liverpool eyeing him as a potential successor to Jurgen Klopp. However, hopes of securing his services might be dashed as Bayern Munich’s honorary president, Uli Hoeness, suggests that a deal this summer is “probably impossible.”
Xabi Alonso, currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, has been heavily linked with the Liverpool job as Klopp prepares to step down at the end of the 2023–24 season. Despite his strong ties to Liverpool from his playing days, reports indicate that The Reds are exploring other options amid doubts about Alonso’s availability.
The Spaniard has made a remarkable impact in his managerial career, leading Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga table and into the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals. While Bayern Munich, in need of a new head coach with Thomas Tuchel departing, have also shown interest in Alonso, Hoeness believes prying him away from Leverkusen this summer will be challenging.
“We’ll have to see if we can do it this year,” Hoeness stated, acknowledging the difficulty of the situation. He hinted Alonso’s inclination to stay at Leverkusen due to their current success, making his departure less likely.
With Leverkusen in contention for their first-ever Bundesliga title under Alonso’s guidance, the club’s strong position further complicates any potential move. As a result, alternative candidates like Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim and Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi emerge as frontrunners for the Liverpool job.
Klopp’s impending departure marks the end of a highly successful era at Liverpool, with the team still competing for multiple trophies this season. As they aim to secure domestic and European success, the search for Klopp’s successor continues amid uncertainties surrounding Alonso’s availability.
