Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has pledged to make history at Anfield following his British-record £125 million ($169 million) transfer from Newcastle United, completed on Monday ahead of the Premier League deadline. The 25-year-old signed a reported six-year contract with the Reds after persuading Newcastle to accept an improved offer.
Isak, who scored 27 goals in 42 appearances for Newcastle last season and helped the club end a 56-year trophy drought by winning the League Cup against Liverpool, said: “I want to create history and win trophies. This is the perfect place for me to grow and take my game to the next level while helping the team.”
The Swedish forward spent part of pre-season training separately at former club Real Sociedad after Newcastle initially rejected a £110 million bid in August. His move was facilitated by Newcastle’s signing of Stuttgart striker Nick Woltemade.
Isak’s arrival marks Liverpool’s eighth major signing this summer, taking their spending to an estimated £416 million—surpassing Chelsea’s £400 million record set in 2023. Other notable recruits include Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Armin Pecsi, and Giovanni Leoni.
With a formidable forward line now featuring Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, Wirtz, Ekitike, and Isak, manager Arne Slot is under pressure to deliver silverware. Liverpool sit top of the Premier League with a 100 percent record after a 1-0 victory over Arsenal on Sunday, their third successive win of the season.
