Lookman Aims to Bring AFCON Trophy Home

Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman has set his New Year’s target for 2026: to return the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy to Nigeria.

The 28-year-old made the declaration while speaking to journalists during a Super Eagles training session ahead of their round-of-16 fixture at the ongoing AFCON in Morocco.

Asked about his ambitions for the year, Lookman said he hopes “to bring gold back home” and stressed that the team is not focused on avoiding any opponents.

“If you want to win a tournament, you have to play the best,” he added.

The Super Eagles are scheduled to face Mozambique on January 5, at Fez Stadium, with kick-off set for 8 pm Nigerian time.

Nigeria topped Group C with a perfect record of three wins and nine points, while Mozambique advanced from Group F as one of the four best third-placed teams.

The two teams last met at AFCON 2010 in Angola, when Nigeria won 3-0, with Peter Odemwingie scoring twice and Obafemi Martins adding the third.

The winner of the Nigeria-Mozambique clash will meet either Algeria or the Democratic Republic of Congo in the quarter-finals.
