Former lead singer of the band Lostprophets, Ian Watkins, has died after being attacked in prison, UK media reported on Saturday.

Watkins, 48, was serving a 29-year jail sentence for multiple serious child sexual offences, including the attempted rape of a baby, following his conviction in December 2013.

He was held at Wakefield prison in northern England, where the fatal assault occurred, according to the PA news agency.

“Emergency services attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later,” the force said in a statement.

The singer had previously been targeted in prison, with UK media reporting in 2023 that he was taken hostage by other inmates and required hospital treatment.

Lostprophets, formed in 1997, achieved platinum success in the UK and gold albums in the United States, but the band disbanded shortly after Watkins was charged.
