Pilots for Lufthansa, Europe’s largest airline group, have announced a two-day walkout across Germany starting on Monday.

The strike, organised by the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union, stems from an ongoing dispute regarding salaries and pension benefits.

This industrial action follows a series of disruptions for the carrier, including a recent strike on Friday by a separate union that grounded nearly 90 per cent of scheduled flights.

The upcoming stoppage is expected to impact passenger services for the flagship Lufthansa brand, as well as its subsidiaries CityLine and Eurowings.

Lufthansa Cargo operations will also face disruptions.

However, the union has made a humanitarian exception due to the current geopolitical climate; flights to several destinations in the Middle East and surrounding regions, including Israel, Egypt, and the UAE, will remain unaffected to ensure continued travel to these sensitive areas.

This marks the fifth time this year that the airline has been targeted by labour strikes, highlighting the deepening rift between management and staff.

While previous actions in March and earlier this month caused significant travel chaos, the VC union’s specific focus on domestic and European routes—while shielding Middle Eastern corridors—indicates a strategic attempt to maintain pressure on the company without exacerbating international regional crises.
