Venezuelan opposition figure and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Maria Corina Machado has said she feared for her life while making a clandestine journey out of Venezuela to attend the award ceremony in Norway.

Speaking to journalists in Oslo on Friday, Machado described the experience as both perilous and deeply spiritual, recalling moments when she believed her life was in genuine danger.

“There were moments in which I felt there was a real risk to my life, and it was also a very spiritual moment because, ultimately, I felt I was in God’s hands and that whatever happened was beyond my control,” she said.

Machado declined to explain how she managed to flee Venezuela, where she has been living in hiding since last year, saying she wanted to protect the individuals who helped her. Her remarks follow dramatic accounts in the US media detailing her covert escape.
