French President Emmanuel Macron has accused rival political forces of deliberately fuelling instability by threatening to topple the new government of reappointed Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu.

“It is everyone’s duty to work towards stability,” Macron stated, adding that “The political forces that have instigated the destabilisation of Sebastien Lecornu are solely responsible for this chaos.”

His comments came as Lecornu prepared to deliver a key policy speech on Tuesday, facing immediate threats of censure motions from the hard-left France Unbowed and the far-right National Rally.

After Lecornu’s first cabinet quickly collapsed, Macron renamed him premier on Friday, immediately triggering outrage and vows from opponents to oust the government.

Lecornu’s new cabinet, a mix of loyalists and technocrats, is expected to present a draft budget on Tuesday morning, aiming for a deficit below five per cent of GDP.

However, with Macron’s camp lacking a majority, Lecornu relies on fragile support.

The left-wing Socialists have warned they may vote against the cabinet unless the government abandons a controversial 2023 pension reform, while the right-wing Republicans are only committing to cooperation on a “bill-by-bill” basis.

When asked about dissolving parliament if the government fails again, Macron declined to speculate, saying, “I want the country to move forward.”
