Madagascar’s President, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, has sacked Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo and dissolved members of the cabinet he appointed after seizing power in October 2025.

The Presidency, in a statement shared on Monday, noted that a new Prime Minister will be appointed shortly, adding that the dismissal was done in accordance with the provisions of the country’s constitution.

Randrianirina’s cabinet choice was scrutinised despite comprising well-known figures in Madagascar’s political landscape.

A Madagascar local newspaper, L’Express de Madagascar, reported that members of youth movements had accused the prime minister and other cabinet members of being ineffective and called for their resignation.

The Presidency added that secretaries-general in each ministry will handle routine administrative affairs until a new government is formed.

The Spokesperson for the “Gen Z” collective, a youth movement, Elliot Randriamandrato, said the dismissal came as a surprise.

“It’s true that we didn’t like the choice of prime minister at first, but they showed an openness that made us think we could move forward,” he told AFP.

Randriamandrato added that the change could be an opportunity to push for people who could take up the demands of the people.

The dismissed Prime Minister was appointed days after Randrianirina took power following the October 14, 2025, coup that ousted Madagascar’s former President Andry Rajoelina.

The October coup followed several weeks of protests led by the youth collective Gen Z Madagascar. The youth movement demanded better living conditions and an adequate water and electricity supply in the country.
