Manchester United ended their long wait for victory at Anfield on Sunday, defeating Liverpool 2-1 to hand the Reds a fourth straight loss, their worst run in 11 years.
Harry Maguire’s towering header in the 84th minute secured back-to-back Premier League wins for the first time under manager Ruben Amorim, easing pressure on the Portuguese coach after a turbulent start to the season.
Bryan Mbeumo had stunned the home crowd just 61 seconds in with a lightning-fast opener, latching onto Amad Diallo’s pass before beating Virgil van Dijk and firing past Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Liverpool, looking disjointed and lacking rhythm, eventually levelled through Cody Gakpo in the 78th minute, but their relief was short-lived as Maguire rose highest to nod home Bruno Fernandes’s cross six minutes later.
The defeat leaves Arne Slot’s side four points behind leaders Arsenal and searching for cohesion despite an eye-watering £450 million spent in the transfer market.
It also extends their losing streak to four consecutive games — a sequence that has raised serious questions about their balance and mental resilience.
“It means everything,” Maguire said after the match. “They’ve had the better of us over the past few years, and it’s not been good for our club. We’ve not given our fans enough days like today — it’s been a long time coming to come here and take three points.”
For Liverpool, it was a sobering reminder of their ongoing struggles following the squad overhaul that followed last season’s title triumph and the tragic death of Diogo Jota in July.
Captain Virgil van Dijk called for unity, saying, “It’s an interesting time because we have to stick together — not just us as players but as a club and fans too. When things get tough, we need to stay mentally strong. It’s a long season.”
Liverpool’s woes began almost immediately, as Mbeumo’s early goal exposed their defensive vulnerabilities.
Despite creating chances — Gakpo struck the woodwork twice and Mohamed Salah missed a gilt-edged opportunity — the champions lacked composure in front of goal.
Meanwhile, United could have extended their lead before half-time, with Fernandes hitting the post from the edge of the box.
Slot tried to change the dynamic after the break, introducing £100 million man Florian Wirtz and fellow summer signing Hugo Ekitike to join a five-man attacking line alongside Salah, Gakpo and Alexander Isak.
Yet the tactical gamble left Liverpool even more open at the back, and United duly punished them when Maguire found space to head in the winner.
Gakpo had one final chance to salvage a point but nodded wide from close range, sealing Liverpool’s first home league defeat in more than a year.
For Amorim, however, it was a landmark victory — United’s first at Anfield since January 2016 — lifting them to ninth in the table and within two points of their old rivals.
