A Malian appeals court on Monday sustained a prison sentence against former Prime Minister Moussa Mara, who was convicted after advocating for political prisoners on social media.

Mara, who led the government from 2014 to 2015, was charged with “undermining the credibility of the state” following a July post where he promised justice for detained political figures.

The judge upheld the original penalty of two years in prison (one year suspended) and a fine of 500,000 CFA francs ($908).

The former prime minister has been in custody since August 1, 2025.

His legal team, led by Mountaga Tall, has vowed to escalate the case to the Supreme Court amid a broader crackdown on dissent by the ruling military junta that seized power in 2020.
