Man Utd’s Financial Outlook Brightens Despite On-Field Struggles

Manchester United has increased its estimated annual core profit (EBITDA) to a range of £180 million to £190 million, up from an earlier projection of £145 million to £160 million.

This boost in financial outlook comes despite the club’s disappointing Premier League performance, largely due to its run to the Europa League final.

Although Ruben Amorim’s side ultimately lost 1-0 to Tottenham in the Europa League final, their participation significantly enhanced club finances. This occurred even as United finished a dismal 15th in the Premier League, marking their worst top-flight campaign in over 50 years.

For the quarter ending March 31, 2025, United’s total revenue rose by 17.4 per cent to £160.5 million compared to the previous year.

Matchday revenue for this period saw a substantial increase of over 50 per cent, reaching £44.5 million, attributed to a higher number of home games.

Concurrently, total operating costs dropped by 20.4 per cent. This reduction was primarily due to a lower wage bill from playing in the Europa League instead of the Champions League, as well as the January loan departures of key players Marcus Rashford and Antony.

A redundancy programme for non-playing staff, initiated last year under minority owner Jim Ratcliffe, also contributed to cost savings.

Chief executive Omar Berrada acknowledged the challenging Premier League season, stating, “We had a difficult season in the Premier League, which we all know fell below our standards, and we have a clear expectation of improvement next season.”

He also expressed pride in reaching the Europa League final despite the runner-up finish.

Amorim is now embarking on a significant squad rebuild at Old Trafford, with notable new arrivals and player exits anticipated.

United have already moved swiftly in the current transfer window, agreeing to a £62.5 million signing of Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and reportedly showing strong interest in Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo.
