Manchester City have reportedly reached an agreement with AC Milan to sign Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders for €55 million ($63 million), marking their first major acquisition of the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old Netherlands international is understood to have agreed to a five-year contract, with final formalities pending.

City aim to complete the deal in time for the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, which begins on June 14.

Reijnders, who joined AC Milan from AZ Alkmaar in 2023, scored 15 goals for the Italian club in the 2024/25 season.

His arrival is expected to bolster Pep Guardiola’s midfield options, especially following the departure of veteran Kevin De Bruyne, who is anticipated to move to Serie A champions Napoli and will miss the Club World Cup.

Midfielder Mateo Kovacic will also be absent from the tournament due to an Achilles injury requiring surgery.

After a disappointing 2024/25 campaign where they finished third in the Premier League and failed to secure a trophy for the first time in eight years, City’s chairman, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, recently admitted the club “probably should have been more aggressive” in the previous transfer market.

Guardiola’s squad will enter the expanded 32-team Club World Cup as defending champions, having won the competition in its previous format two years ago in Saudi Arabia.

They are scheduled to kick off their campaign against Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia on June 18.

The current transfer window remains open until June 10 for clubs looking to sign players specifically for the Club World Cup before reopening on June 16.
