Following a stampede in Okija, Anambra State, on Saturday, an undetermined number of locals are thought to have died.
According to the Cable, the locals were trampled underfoot as they attempted to collect their portion of the rice that is distributed annually.
The rush also occurred at an annual Christmas event hosted by Obi Jackson, the chairman and CEO of Nestoil, according to numerous X users.
A man speaking Igbo remarked in a two-minute, three-second video of the tragedy that went viral on X, “This is our Lady’s Mortuary in Ihiala; these are the folks that perished at Obi Jackson’s home this morning, people that went to pick rice!
According to reports, some casualties were sent to local hospitals.
When reached, Anambra Governor Charles Aburime, the principal press secretary, confirmed the occurrence.
The state government is keeping an eye on the situation and will make a statement shortly, according to Aburime.
A few days prior, in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, a stampede at a funfair claimed the lives of around 35 individuals; the majority of them were children.
The second incident in 2024 involving the distribution of grains is the Anambra stampede.
Some Nasarawa State University Keffi students were killed in a stampede in March as the state administration was distributing rice donations.
