Enzo Maresca has assured Chelsea fans that his team will be able to adjust their tactics if necessary to secure a win in Sunday’s crucial London derby against Arsenal.
After receiving criticism for a lackluster performance in a 1-0 victory over struggling Leicester last weekend and more audible discontent during the 1-0 win over Copenhagen in the UEFA Conference League, Maresca acknowledged the need for adaptability.
Chelsea’s method of controlling possession and slowing the game down, even when opportunities to attack Leicester’s vulnerable defense arose, has drawn frustration from fans.
Despite his insistence on a rigid tactical approach, Maresca conceded that facing a high-pressing Arsenal team might require Chelsea to adapt their style.
“The intention will be to control the ball, but it depends a lot on the opponent,” Maresca explained. “If we plan the game sitting back, then our players will be sprinting for 60-70 minutes. But if we have more space to attack, we will adapt.”
Chelsea’s approach will need to be flexible, with Maresca highlighting that playing against a team like Arsenal, which presses aggressively, could provide more opportunities for counter-attacks.
Maresca also confirmed that goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, who had been dropped for several games after a series of mistakes, will start against Arsenal following his return to form in Chelsea’s victory over Leicester.
“We think Robert needed some days off, but he’s back now,” Maresca added. “Hopefully, he will remain our first-choice keeper until the end of the season.”
