South Africa cricket captain Aiden Markram has issued a stern challenge to his bowling unit, demanding greater precision ahead of their critical T20 World Cup showdown against New Zealand.

Speaking in Ahmedabad on Friday, Markram emphasised that “every delivery counts,” reflecting on a chaotic victory over Afghanistan that required two nerve-wracking Super Overs to decide.

Despite remaining unbeaten in Group D, the Proteas skipper expressed concern over the lack of discipline that nearly derailed their campaign.

The primary frustration for Markram lies in the sheer volume of “extras” conceded by his attack, which has totalled 22 runs across their first two matches.

During the tense finale against Afghanistan, star pacer Kagiso Rabada struggled with his rhythm, delivering two no-balls and a wide in the final over while defending 13 runs.

He noted that in the shortest format of the game, such unforced errors often become the difference between a comfortable win and a tournament-ending loss.

The stakes for Saturday’s match could not be higher, as the winner of this clash between undefeated sides will become the first team to officially qualify for the Super Eights.

Markram urged his players to focus on winning “smaller moments” throughout the game rather than becoming overwhelmed by the pressure of the final result.

He admitted that while the double Super Over was a rare and thrilling experience, it highlighted a need for a more clinical approach moving forward.

New Zealand, meanwhile, appears ready for the challenge, with pace bowler Matt Henry highlighting the storied sporting rivalry between the two nations.

Drawing comparisons to the intense battles seen on the rugby pitch, Henry noted that facing South Africa in a World Cup setting always demands a team’s best performance.

As both sides prepare for the Ahmedabad heat, the focus remains on whether South Africa can tighten their discipline or if the Black Caps will capitalise on the Proteas’ recent inconsistency.
