Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush is facing a race against time to be fit for Sunday’s derby clash with Manchester United after sustaining a knee ligament injury on international duty with Egypt.
The 26-year-old was forced off just four minutes into Egypt’s goalless World Cup qualifying draw against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou on Tuesday. He initially attempted to continue after the challenge but was unable to carry on and limped out of the match.
The Egyptian Football Association confirmed in a statement that Marmoush had suffered a bruised knee ligament and would undergo further assessment with an X-ray upon his return to Cairo on Wednesday. The extent of the injury will determine whether he can feature in this weekend’s Premier League showdown.
Marmoush, who arrived at City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January for £59 million, has scored eight goals in 28 appearances across all competitions. His potential absence would be a major setback for Pep Guardiola’s side as they prepare to host United, with both Manchester clubs eager for victory after an underwhelming start to the season.
