Mauritius PM to Step Down After Conceding Election Defeat

Mauritius’s Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth admitted defeat on Monday in the contentious legislative election on the Indian Ocean island.

He admitted that his Lepep alliance, led by his Militant Socialist Movement (MSM), was “on the brink of a significant loss” in Sunday’s election.

“The citizens have selected a different team to govern the nation,” Jugnauth, who has held the position of prime minister since 2017, told the media.

He added, “We must honour this decision and extend our best wishes to the country and its people.”

While official results are still pending, opposition leader Navin Ramgoolam, leading his Alliance of Change coalition, appears poised to reclaim the prime minister’s position for a third time.
