Olympic champion and world record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone has secured her spot at the upcoming World Championships after winning the 400m at the U.S. trials.

The 25-year-old, widely regarded as the greatest female 400m hurdler in history, finished with a time of 48.90 seconds at Hayward Field.

McLaughlin-Levrone, who holds multiple records in the 400m hurdles, decided to switch to the 400m flat this season to challenge herself.

She told reporters that after a six-year unbeaten streak in her primary event, she felt it was time to “step out of the box and push myself differently.” She confirmed she will not be competing in the 400m hurdles at the World Championships.

The athlete stated that she is not focused on breaking any records in the new event but is instead embracing the challenge and a new learning experience.

Her dominant performance on Saturday saw her take an early lead and pull away from the field, with Isabella Whittaker finishing second in 49.59 seconds and Aaliyah Butler in third with a time of 49.91 seconds.
