A helicopter carrying out a medical evacuation crashed overnight in southeastern Libya, killing a medic and two crew members, state media reported on Tuesday.

The Libyan News Agency (LANA) said the aircraft went down near an airbase in the Kufra region, about 60 kilometres north of the border with Chad.

According to LANA, the helicopter was attempting to evacuate a soldier who had been injured in a road accident in the desert.

It was unclear what happened to the injured soldier, and the cause of the crash was not known at the time of filing this report.

Libyan media reports said two of those killed were foreign nationals, but this information had not been confirmed by officials.

The Matan al-Sarra airbase is located in territory controlled by Libya’s eastern administration, led by military commander Khalifa Haftar.

Libya remains divided between rival administrations in the east and west.

The western, UN-backed government is led by Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah, while the eastern authorities maintain separate political and military structures.

The country has faced prolonged instability since the 2011 Arab Spring uprising that toppled and killed long-time ruler Muammar Gaddafi.
