Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev has been hit with a $76,000 fine following a series of outbursts at the Australian Open. The world number five was penalised after his temper flared during his matches, resulting in destruction and frustration on the court.
Medvedev faced a $10,000 fine for a meltdown in his first-round win against Thailand’s Kasidit Samrej, during which he damaged a net camera and wrecked his racquet. However, his behaviour in the second round, where he lost to 19-year-old qualifier Learner Tien, earned him a much heftier fine of $66,000.
During that match, Medvedev threw his racquet towards the sidelines, causing it to skid across the court and slam into an advertising panel. He also clashed with the umpire over repeated foot fault calls and skipped his post-match press conference, which led to additional penalties.
The incident adds to a growing list of temperamental outbursts from Medvedev, who had previously reached three of the last four Australian Open finals, including a dramatic 2024 loss to Jannik Sinner after leading by two sets.
