Messi Extends Inter Miami Contract

Argentine superstar Lionel Messi has agreed to a contract extension with Inter Miami, as confirmed by Major League Soccer on Thursday.

Inter Miami shared a video on their X feed showing Messi signing the contract at a table in the club’s new stadium, which is still under construction, with the simple caption: “He’s Home.”

“Official: Leo Messi is set to continue as an MLS player with Inter Miami,” the league’s Spanish account on X stated.

The new agreement will keep him with Inter until the conclusion of the 2028 season, according to sources familiar with the deal. The current contract of the 38-year-old World Cup champion is set to expire at the end of the 2025 MLS season.

A new agreement had been expected as a formality after club sources said last month that the franchise had finalised an extension.

Messi’s contract guarantees he will remain involved in competitive play well beyond the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament will kick off on June 11, with the final scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 following an unsatisfactory tenure at Paris Saint-Germain, although he spent the majority of his remarkable career at Barcelona, where he played from 2004 to 2021 after progressing through the youth ranks of the Spanish club.

During his time at Barcelona, he won ten La Liga titles and the UEFA Champions League four times.

In 2022, he guided Argentina to World Cup victory in Qatar and expressed his ambition to attempt to defend the title next year.

He has netted 114 international goals and has also clinched the Copa America twice with Argentina, in 2021 and 2024.

Despite Inter Miami being eliminated in the playoffs, he was awarded the MLS Most Valuable Player title for the 2024 season.

In 2025, he became the quickest player to achieve 40 goals in MLS history.

This season, Messi has led Miami back to the playoffs after helping them secure third place in the Eastern Conference.

He ended Inter Miami‘s regular season with an impressive hat-trick last Saturday in a dominant 5-2 victory over Nashville SC, finishing with 29 goals from 28 matches to earn the MLS Golden Boot.
