Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi scored his 901st career goal on Sunday as Inter Miami defeated New York City FC 3-2, handing them their first loss of the Major League Soccer season.
Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers in history, recently reached the 900-goal milestone and added to his tally with a decisive free-kick equaliser in the 61st minute.
Inter Miami opened the scoring through Gonzalo Lujan in the fourth minute with a low finish into the bottom corner.

NYCFC responded in the 17th minute when Nicolas Fernandez levelled with a powerful free kick into the top corner.
Messi came close several times in the first half, missing a breakaway chance in the 27th minute, being denied by goalkeeper Matt Freese in the 36th, hitting the crossbar in the 42nd, and firing just wide before halftime.
The hosts took the lead in the 59th minute through Agustin Ojeda, who finished off a pass from Maxi Moralez.
Messi restored parity two minutes later, converting a left-footed free kick after being fouled by Aiden O’Neill.
The winner came in the 74th minute when Brazilian defender Micael headed in from a cross by Noah Allen.
Miami improved to 3-1-1, while NYCFC suffered their first defeat of the season, dropping to 3-1.
