Argentine superstar, Lionel Messi, has edged closer to another historic milestone after scoring in Inter Miami’s 2–1 victory over DC United, a result that secured the club’s second win of the Major League Soccer season.
His strike not only helped Miami maintain momentum early in the campaign but also moved him within touching distance of an extraordinary personal record.
Messi opened his account for the night in the 27th minute at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium, producing a delicate chipped finish over goalkeeper Sean Johnson. The goal marked his third of the MLS season and the 80th of his Inter Miami career, pushing his overall career tally to 899. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner now stands just one goal away from the landmark of 900 career goals.

The 38-year-old forward, who turns 39 in June, has built one of football’s most remarkable scoring records. Of his 899 goals, 672 came during his legendary spell at Barcelona, while he added 32 more during his time with Paris Saint-Germain. Messi has also been prolific on the international stage, scoring 115 goals for Argentina.
Inter Miami had taken the lead earlier in the match through Messi’s international teammate Rodrigo De Paul. The midfielder opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a precise curling effort from the edge of the penalty area, giving the visitors early control.
Ten minutes later, Messi doubled Miami’s advantage after connecting with a precise through ball from Mateo Silvetti. Timing his run perfectly, he lifted a composed first-time chip over Johnson to give Miami a commanding two-goal cushion.
DC United responded strongly after the interval and reduced the deficit in the 75th minute when Israeli forward Tai Baribo found the net. Despite the late pressure, Inter Miami remained organised defensively and managed the closing stages effectively to secure the victory.
The win lifted the reigning MLS champions to third place in the Eastern Conference with six points from three matches, continuing a promising start to the season.
