Messi’s Late Goal Sends Miami to Quarter-Finals After 4-0 Aggregate Win

Lionel Messi came off the bench to score as Inter Miami secured a 2-0 win over Jamaica’s Cavalier on Thursday, advancing to the quarter-finals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup with a 4-0 aggregate victory.

Having been rested for Miami’s last three games, including the first leg against Cavalier, Messi started on the bench but entered the match in the 53rd minute. The crowd at the National Stadium was thrilled by his appearance, and the Argentine soon made his mark. Messi netted the second goal with the final kick of the game, finishing a neat through ball from teenager Santiago Morales by clipping it first-time past Cavalier goalkeeper Vinco Barclett.

Despite the home side’s dreams of an upset being dashed, the Jamaican fans cheered for Messi, delighted to see the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner playing in their country for the first time.

Miami had looked to seal the tie early, knowing that an away goal would effectively end Cavalier’s chances. Telasco Segovia fired a long-range effort just wide, and although the bumpy surface made passing difficult, Miami continued to press. Luis Suarez nearly added a goal with a well-struck volley from a tight angle but missed narrowly.

Midfielder David Ruiz was forced off with an injury, and Benjamin Cremaschi came on in his place. But Miami maintained their momentum, and in the 37th minute, they were awarded a penalty after Cavalier’s Christopher Ainsworth fouled Tadeo Allende. Suarez stepped up to confidently convert, giving Miami a 3-0 aggregate lead and easing any nerves.

Cavalier, featuring several talented young players, refused to give up and nearly pulled one back through Kaile Auvray. The substitute burst in from the left and fired a low shot that was brilliantly saved at the near post by Oscar Ustari.

Messi’s goal capped the evening, securing a comfortable win for Miami, who will now face Los Angeles FC in the quarter-finals. Miami head coach Javier Mascherano was pleased with Messi’s contribution. “He felt very good, he scored, the Jamaican people could see him, so it was a great night for everyone,” he said.

For Cavalier head coach Rudolph Speid, the atmosphere was a highlight despite the defeat. “It was electrifying. People came here to see Messi. Our performance was nothing to be ashamed of,” Speid said. “I think a lot more young players will come out to play the game, which is what you want.”
